Abstract

Armenia’s hosting of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) marks a new chapter in the country’s emergence as a contributor to global environmental policy and biodiversity governance. This segment explores the significance of COP17, focusing on the implementation of the CBD and the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The segment also examines the current state of biodiversity policy in Armenia. It also considers the growing importance, both nationally and internationally, of science-policy platforms in informing decision-making and supporting evidence-based implementation of biodiversity commitments. The segment will also discuss how COP17 can catalyze the internationalization of Armenia’s research community, policy development processes, and conservation initiatives, strengthening the country’s engagement with global scientific and policy networks.
